Introduction to Educational Activities on Environmental Services and Water Management at the Halu Oleo University Botanical Garden for Students of SD Negeri 92 Kendari

On April 24, 2025, a community service program was carried out at the Kebun Raya Universitas Halu Oleo (UHO), aimed at introducing the role of conservation areas in maintaining water balance to elementary school students. The program involved 50 participants, including 28 students from SD Negeri 92 Kendari, 2 accompanying teachers, 20 faculty members from the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Science and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UHO, and 2 staff members from Kebun Raya UHO. This activity utilized an experiential learning approach, encouraging students to engage directly in exploring the conservation area. They were introduced to various plant species and learned about the ecological functions of forests, particularly in regulating water systems. Storytelling techniques were employed to present the material in an engaging and accessible manner for the children. Additionally, hands-on interaction with nature and facilitators provided a deeper, more enjoyable learning experience. The outcomes of the activity showed that experiential learning effectively enhanced environmental awareness and understanding among children. Furthermore, the program underscored the importance of collaboration between schools, universities, and conservation area managers in creating meaningful and sustainable learning experiences. This model of activity can be replicated in other locations with adjustments based on the specific characteristics of the participants and local environments.
